Left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Johnson has been ruled out of Australia's upcoming limited overs matches in Ireland and England due to an infected right elbow.

As a result of the injury, the Australia selectors have called up uncapped 19-year-old seamer Josh Hazlewood as his replacement.

Townsville-born quick Johnson is however expected to be fit for the two-Test series against Pakistan, which begins at Lord's on July 13.

Australia are due to fly out for their limited-overs tour in the coming days with their opening match against Ireland in Dublin on June 17, before a five-match series with England and two Twenty20s against Pakistan.

Flare-up

Johnson will now undergo treatment on an infection that first troubled him during last month's ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.

"Since returning to Australia he has had a flare-up of the condition and is currently being treated for it," Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

"As part of the treatment he requires specialist medical management over the coming weeks and as such he's been ruled out of the six ODI's against Ireland and England.

"It is hoped that he will make a full recovery in time to join the tour and take part in the Twenty20 internationals and the Test series against Pakistan in England, which begin on 5 July."

Hazlewood enjoyed a breakthrough season in domestic cricket with New South Wales in the Australian summer - and he was the second-leading wicket-taker at the U19s World Cup in January.

Opportunity

He took 4-30 in the final as Australia beat Pakistan and chairman of the national selectors panel Andrew Hilditch believes the teenager will be suited to English conditions.

"The ruling out of Mitchell Johnson from the one-day series is obviously disappointing for Mitchell and the team but it has created an opportunity for the promising young fast bowler Josh Hazlewood to join the Australian squad for the one-day series," Hilditch said.

"Josh Hazlewood has been identified as one of a crop of young fast bowlers who the NSP consider can impact for Australia at international level.

"The NSP consider he will be well suited to English conditions and this provides a great opportunity for him to be part of the Australian set up on a tour of Ireland and England.

"We are sure if he gets an opportunity he will perform very well."
