South Africa scrum-half Fourie du Preez is set for a lengthy injury lay-off after opting have shoulder surgery.

The 28-year-old will discuss a schedule for rehabilitation on Sunday but it is thought that he could be on the sidelines for the rest of the calendar year.

Du Preez will miss the whole of the international season if that prediction is correct.

The Bulls player will now focus on regaining full fitness ahead of the World Cup in New Zealand, which will take place in September and October of 2011.

Ricky Januarie and Ruan Pienaar are likely to fight it out for the number nine spot for the June Tests with Wales, France and Italy.
