Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has been confirmed as Lancashire's new signing for this season's Friends Provident Twenty20 competition.

"Shoaib has a proven track record in the game and is a versatile cricketer. He's at a good age, can bat up and down the order and is an experienced spin bowler. We look forward to welcoming him to the squad."

The 28-year-old is not playing for his country due to his 12-month ban issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board after being accused of disrupting team morale during the tour of Australia.

Malik is appealing against that ban, but in the meantime he will likely make his debut for the Lightning against Durham on June 4.

He will join incoming overseas duo Simon Katich and Shivnarine Chanderpaul at Old Trafford, while South Africa international Ashwell Prince departs at the end of May.

"When Lancashire approached me to come and play for them I didn't hesitate in saying yes," said Malik.

Opportunity

"I love playing cricket in England and the opportunity to play with a club of Lancashire's reputation was too good to pass up.

"Their recent overseas signings in Katich and Chanderpaul only add to an already strong list. I'm very excited and look forward to a strong T20 campaign."

Lancashire coach Peter Moores added: "Shoaib has a proven track record in the game and is a versatile cricketer.

"He's at a good age, can bat up and down the order and is an experienced spin bowler. We look forward to welcoming him to the squad."

Malik's arrival is subject to visa regulations and the approval of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
