Alastair Cook was delighted to secure an unbeaten 158 in his first innings as England's Test captain as his side dominated on the opening day of the first Test in Bangladesh.

"To bat all day, I'm really proud of that and obviously the team are in a really good position."
Alastair Cook Quotes of the week

Cook hit his 11th Test ton to help the tourists reach an imposing 374-3 at stumps in Chittagong, while Kevin Pietersen recovered from a poor run of form before falling for 99.

"It's kind of what dreams are made of," Cook told Sky Sports News.

"To bat all day, I'm really proud of that and obviously the team are in a really good position."

Cook, deputising for the rested Andrew Strauss, is hoping to expand his individual and team total when the match resumes on Saturday.

"You know what it's like coming back, you've got to get yourself in again," added Cook.

"If you get yourself in then you can hopefully play at the same tempo and hopefully keep going and get a real big one."

The skipper was surprised with Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan's decision to field first, but was thrilled to set up his century with a maximum.

"I think that's the first time I've brought a 100 up with a six. It gives you something to write home about," he added.

Pietersen, meanwhile, was happy to return to his big-scoring ways, despite falling one run short of what would have been his 17th Test century.

"The lads have just said, 'Would you have taken 99 this morning?', and the way I've been playing over the last couple of weeks, I certainly would have done," said Pietersen.

"I'm disappointed, but the team is in a fantastic position, Chef (Cook) played brilliantly, and 99 is better than nothing."

Hard work

Pietersen revealed he spent the week working hard on playing spin.

"I've had long chats to (England coach) Andy Flower, who was obviously an amazing player of spin, and I've had a long chat to Rahul Dravid during the week and he was spectacular in little things that he spoke about and the little tips he gave me," he said.

"You've seen how hard I've worked this week, I've loved it, and to get 99 today, that was special."
