The Western Australia batsman sustained the problem during the third one-day international against West Indies on Februrary 12.

He has been ruled out of the two-match Twenty20 series against the Black Caps but could return for the five one-day internationals that follow.

"Shaun Marsh injured his back during the warm-up for the third ODI against the West Indies in Sydney and while he continues to improve there are still some signs of the injury," said Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.

"He will continue to be monitored before a decision is made on his availability for the one-day component of the tour to New Zealand."

Experienced middle-order batsman Mike Hussey has been drafted into the squad.

"Mike Hussey has shown excellent form throughout this Australian summer, is well equipped for Twenty20 cricket and thoroughly deserves this opportunity to push for selection in the World Twenty20 to be held in the West Indies during May this year," said national selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch.

The opening T20 international takes place in Wellington on February 26.
