Anthony McGrath has stepped down as Yorkshire captain after admitting the role affected his form.

"I felt that it would be in the best interests of the team if I stood down and concentrated on scoring runs again."

The 34-year-old averaged just 33 last season as the club ended up fighting for survival in Division One of the County Championship.

And in a statement on the county's official site, McGrath says he is hoping by stepping down he can rediscover his form with the bat.

He said: "It was a difficult decision to give up the club captaincy. I always said that I knew exactly what it meant to be given such a prestigious job and I was really honoured to lead the side in 2009.

"I sat down with (director of cricket) Martyn Moxon at the end of the summer and I came to the decision that the captaincy had affected my form in the latter part of the season.

"I therefore felt that it would be in the best interests of the team if I stood down and concentrated on scoring runs again.

"I am right behind the decision to appoint the player who will be unveiled on Tuesday as Yorkshire's new captain. He will bring a lot to the role and has my full support.

"As a senior figure in the side in 2010 I am there if he needs any advice or support."

Yorkshire are set to hold a press conference on Tuesday to confirm their captain for 2010, with Andrew Gale believed to be the favourite.
