Denly: England opportunity

Denly: England opportunity

Joe Denly is the only uncapped player in England's three squads for the Twenty20 and one-day series with Australia and the one-off one-dayer against Ireland.

"Joe Denly has impressed the selectors for a while with some excellent performances in one-day cricket and with Kevin Pietersen unavailable through injury, this is an excellent opportunity for Joe to step up to the next level and show what he is capable of. "
Geoff Miller Quotes of the week

The Kent opener is named in 15-man squads for the two T20 internationals and seven ODIs against Australia, while the selectors have also named a separate 14-man party for the trip to Belfast, which is scheduled for just three days after the conclusion of the decisive Ashes Test at the Oval.

The same squad that faces Australia in the ODIs will also be taken to South Africa for the ICC Champions Trophy, which starts on September 22.

As expected, Hamsphire batsman Kevin Pietersen is not yet ready return from Achilles surgery.

But Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who has struggled throughout the summer with a knee injury, has been selected in all three squads, although it remains to be seen if he will be fit to take his place.

England will be captained in Belfast by Paul Collingwood, in the rested Andrew Strauss' absence, as will the 15 men chosen to face Australia in two Twenty20 internationals at Old Trafford.

After that, England face seven NatWest ODIs against Australia in just over two weeks - before flying out for the Champions Trophy.

Essex batsman Ravi Bopara, discarded from the Test team for the Ashes decider, is picked in all three squads - as are Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid, Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior and Middlesex batsman Owais Shah.

Foster axed

Prior's selection in all formats means there is no place for Essex gloveman James Foster, who impressed at the World Twenty20 earlier in the summer.

There is no place at all for Ian Bell, Alastair Cook, Robert Key, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Steve Harmison.

"We have kept faith with the bulk of the squad which was successful in the NatWest Series against West Indies earlier this summer and also included two players, Luke Wright and Adil Rashid, who were part of our squad for the ICC World T20," said national selector Geoff Miller.

"Joe Denly has impressed the selectors for a while with some excellent performances in one-day cricket and with Kevin Pietersen unavailable through injury, this is an excellent opportunity for Joe to step up to the next level and show what he is capable of.

"Andrew Strauss has led the side extremely well in both forms of cricket this summer, but the selectors felt it would be beneficial for him to have a short break from international cricket following the conclusion of the npower Ashes Test series and Paul Collingwood will lead the side in Ireland and in The NatWest International Twenty20s."
