Mitchell Johnson believes a simplified approach has led to him finally making an impact with the ball in the Ashes.
Left-armer believes the selection of Clark was crucial for tourists
Mitchell Johnson insists media coverage of the strained relationship between his mother and girlfriend was not the reason behind his poor form at the start of the Ashes series.
The left-arm paceman arrived in England billed as the star man in Australia's bowling attack.
However, having been instrumental in the series win in South Africa, the 27-year-old struggled to get to grips with English conditions in the opening two Tests at Cardiff and Lord's.
While newspaper journalists suggested that issues off the field were behind Johnson's lacklustre displays, the player denied this was the case.
Situation
"I haven't been in this situation before, with personal matters," he admitted.
"But personal things like that do not affect me when I go out on the pitch. Once I step out on that field, that is all dead and buried."
Instead Johnson believes he over-complicated matters with his bowling, while he has also changed his on-pitch persona during the series.
A more combative approach saw an improvement in the drawn Test at Edgbaston and he was then influential in the fourth match of the series, helping Australia square the series inside three days at Headingley.
"All I'm trying to do now is run in, hit my areas, not worry about technical stuff on the field - that's for the nets," he added.
While it was Johnson who finished off the Test with a five-wicket haul on Sunday, it had been Peter Siddle and Stuart Clark who had shot out England for 102 on day one.
Johnson believes the return of Clark to the Test side was crucial to help balance an attack that had previously failed to take 20 wickets on the tour.
Experience
"It's definitely good for us to have someone like that, with the experience he has," he said of his fellow seamer.
"He's played in Ashes series before, and it was great having him back and seeing him get a few wickets.
"Peter Siddle and I bowl very similar in some ways, trying to hit the deck as hard as we can.
"It wasn't working for us, especially at Lord's when we didn't get it right - so having Stuart Clark there, it does complement our bowling. It's great to have someone who can just put it on the spot for you."
