Prince: Strong acquisition
South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince has signed for Lancashire as cover for overseas player VVS Laxman.
"My initial conversations with Mike Watkinson have been very positive and I see myself playing an important role for them in the middle order."
Ashwell Prince Quotes of the week
The 31-year-old, who enjoyed a spell with Nottinghamshire last season, will play at Old Trafford until Laxman returns from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in May.
He missed the Proteas' recent series win in Australia with a thumb injury, but is expected to return for the home series against the world champions before moving to England in April.
"I'm really pleased to be coming on board with Lancashire," Prince said.
"My initial conversations with Mike Watkinson have been very positive and I see myself playing an important role for them in the middle order.
"I enjoyed my stint in the UK last year and am excited to be joining such a proud and successful club."
Prince has a Test average of 45.68 and a first-class average of 42.70, but failed to attract any bids in February's IPL auction.
Lancashire director of cricket Watkinson is confident the Twenty20 tournament's loss will be to the Lightning's gain though.
"As we experienced last season, the first two months is non-stop cricket with plenty of Championship and one-day fixtures in a short space of time," Watkinson added.
"It's important we get the best possible start, and to have the services of a world-class batsman like Ashwell over this period will help us set the foundation to what we hope will be a highly successful season."
Lancashire get their 2009 campaign under way against Glamorgan Dragons in the Friends Provident Trophy on April 19.
