Moeen Ali has signed a new contract with Worcestershire that keeps him at New Road through the 2011 season.

The 21-year-old batsman will have the chance to establish himself in the middle order following the retirement of Graeme Hick and has been backed by director of cricket Steven Rhodes to do just that.

"Moeen Ali is a young and very talented player and is the kind of player we want to see flourish with the county," Rhodes said.

"He has already proved his worth but he has a great opportunity to cement a regular place in the team this year following Graeme Hick's retirement.

"I am delighted he has committed his future to Worcestershire."

Moeen joined the county from Warwickshire in 2007 and played a big part in winning the Pro40 Division One title, setting up the final day victory over Gloucestershire with a 151 opening stand with Steven Davies.

"I'm very happy to commit to Worcestershire and repay the faith that the club, and Steve Rhodes in particular, have shown in me," he said.

"New Road is an exciting place to be at the moment and I'm delighted to be part of a team that I believe can do well in all formats of the game."
