Australia have welcomed Andrew Symonds back into the international arena after including the all-rounder in the squad for the first Test against New Zealand.

"Obviously it will be disappointing for Cameron White to miss selection after playing four Tests in India."
Andrew Hilditch Quotes of the week

The Queenslander was ditched by Australian officials after he missed a team meeting leading up to the first match of the three-game one-day international series against Bangladesh at the end of August.

He was not selected for the 2-0 series defeat in India but, after sorting out his personal issues, has been welcomed back into the Test squad at the expense of Cameron White.

"The national selection panel has been advised by Cricket Australia that Andrew Symonds has successfully completed the prescribed plan to enable us consider him for selection for the Australian cricket team," said chief selector Andrew Hilditch.

Selection

"Over the previous 12 months, Andrew has cemented his place in the Test team with outstanding performances at home and in the West Indies, and he now deserves to come back into the Australian squad.

"We're selecting a great player. We don't think he had anything to prove.

"I thought he was exceptional in Australia last year under some difficult circumstances.

"We thought he played really well in the West Indies Test series.

"He would've liked to have got more runs (in his recent stint at state level) and I would've liked him to get more runs but he doesn't need to prove anything.

"If he gets his chance I'm sure he'll seize it."

Symonds is back in the 13-man squad for the first Test, which will be reduced to 12 next Tuesday ahead of the game on Thursday.

Jason Krejza took 12 wickets on his debut in Nagpur on the recent tour of India and has been rewarded with the solitary spinning berth in the squad, while seamer Peter Siddle has retained his place.

Disappointment

"Obviously it will be disappointing for Cameron White to miss selection after playing four Tests in India," Hilditch added.

"With our return to Australia, however, only one specialist spinner has been named in the squad.

"Jason Krejza richly deserves to retain his place in the side after such an outstanding debut in Nagpur. It will now be a significant challenge for him to adapt back to Australian conditions and continue his development."

The first Test takes place at the 'Gabba from November 20-25.

Australian squad for the first Test: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Jason Krejza, Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson
