Jamie How's 88 allowed New Zealand to chase down a target of 202 and win the first one-day international against Bangladesh by six wickets.

Opening batsman How was well supported by top-order colleagues Brendon McCullum and Peter Fulton as the Black Caps eased to victory with 44 balls to spare at Eden Park.

How shared an opening stand of 90 with McCullum (40) and 67 with Fulton (35) for the second wicket to turn the run chase into a formality.

And although How fell to left-arm spinner Shakib-al-Hasan (3-56) with 29 still required, Scott Styris guided the hosts across the line with an unbeaten 25.

Earlier Kyle Mills, Mark Gillespie and Jacob Oram each collected three wickets to bowl out Bangladesh for 201 in 46.3 overs.

Tamim Iqbal (50) and Mohammad Ashraful (70) contributed half-centuries but the tourists' final total proved well below-par.

The second game of the three-match series takes place in Napier on Friday.
