Sanath Jayasuriya has announced he will retire from Test match cricket at the end of the first Test against England.
The swashbuckling Sri Lankan opener hit a brisk 78 runs as the hosts fought back on day three in Kandy.
Jayasuriya's knock helped Sri Lanka close on 167-2 - a lead of 74 runs - after England had looked to take control of the match.
Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan became the leading wicket taker in Test history earlier in the day, but the Kandy Test will now also go down as Jayasuriya's last.
He told Sky Sports 1: "This is my last Test match and I'll be retiring from Test cricket after this game.
"I've played more than 100 Test matches in my career and I was thinking even before the England series that this would be the best opportunity for me to retire.
"I will be continuing in one-day cricket though."
Mentality
The left-hand batsman will be remembered as one of Sri Lanka's greatest ever players, having played 110 Tests with an average of 40 runs and 14 centuries to his name, and he wants to go out on a high.
"There's a lot of spin because the wicket has deteriorated. It's not easy to bat in the middle in the fourth innings," he added.
"We need to get some more runs on the board and then we have a very good chance in the fourth innings.
"We need to bat for at least two more sessions and then we can put England under pressure."
