Australian great Shane Warne has backed Monty Panesar to be a great spinner but only if the England left-armer works on certain aspects of his game.

"Monty has a chance to be a top spinner. He needs to work out his optimum pace in order to generate the most spin."

Since making his international debut in March 2006, Panesar has enjoyed a meteoric rise - claiming 73 Test wickets in just 20 matches.

However Warne, the first player to claim 700 Test victims, believes Panesar needs to concentrate on his speed and being more ambitious in the one-day game.

He told Sport: "Monty has a chance to be a top spinner.

"He needs to work out his optimum pace in order to generate the most spin.

"He's better in Test matches than one-dayers, where he tends to be a bit negative.

"He bowls negatively to attacking fields when he should be the other way around; he should be aggressive with a defensive field and challenge the batsmen to go over the top."

Warne, who captained Hampshire in the County Championship, has also called on England coach Peter Moores to make the most of the domestic game.

He added: "I think this last season I've been with Hampshire has been the strongest one I've seen for county cricket, and it's seen young bowlers like Chris Tremlett, Stuart Broad and James Anderson come through.

"Under Duncan Fletcher, England didn't pay enough respect to county cricket and I hope that changes under Peter Moores.

"Our (Australian) domestic cricket is very strong, and we look after it. England have to do the same."
