Yorkshire's director of cricket Martyn Moxon has defended the county's decision to recruit Pakistan duo Inzamam-ul-Haq and Imran Tahir on short-term contracts.

With Yorkshire leading the County Championship in mid-August, Inzamam and Tahir arrived as overseas replacements for Younus Khan and Jason Gillespie.

But the Tykes' title hopes were all but ended with a crushing innings defeat at Sussex in their penultimate fixture, a game in which Inzamam twice failed with the bat and Tahir did not take a wicket.

Moxon conceded things had not worked out as envisaged, but also felt the thinking behind the double signing was sound.

Reasonable

"We talked at length about what we should do when Younus left, but I think given the situation we were in, and the importance of the fixtures coming up at that time, it was a reasonable call to go for someone of Inzamam's quality," Moxon told the Yorkshire Post.

"At the moment, it's not turned out as either he or we would like, but you can't make decisions in hindsight.

"He's (Inzamam) worked really hard and I've been impressed with his overall attitude. He's practiced pretty much daily since he's been with us and there has certainly been no lack of effort or commitment.

"It's disappointing for everyone concerned that it's not quite worked out for him yet, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

"It hasn't happened for one or two players lately, not just Inzy."

Gamble

Moxon admitted the signing of leg-spinner Tahir - who took 0-141 against Sussex - was a 'calculated gamble' that had not paid off.

"The decision to sign Imran was probably more difficult, but again it was felt that the mystery of a leg-spinner would serve us well in the game at Hove," he added.

"It was a gamble to sign him, a calculated gamble that, on this occasion, didn't pay off."
