James Anderson has been called into England's World Twenty20 squad as a replacement for Ravinder Bopara.

Essex all-rounder Bopara was ruled out after suffering a broken and dislocated right thumb while attempting to take a catch off his own bowling during the fifth match of the NatWest Series.

Anderson's omission from the original 15-man squad was a surprise as he had been in good form throughout the summer and was named as England's man-of-the-series during the recent Tests against India.

Flintoff and Tremlett

The selectors may have to make further changes to their original squad as both Andrew Flintoff and Chris Tremlett remain injury doubts.

Flintoff sat out the NatWest Series defeats at Headingley and the Oval due to a problem with his left ankle and his participation in the World Twenty20 hinges on the opinion of England's medical team.

The Lancashire all-rounder has had a pain-killing injection in an effort to play in Saturday's NatWest Series decider, but is unlikely to be risked at the World Twenty20 if there is a danger of causing further damage to an ankle that has been operated on three times during his career, most recently at the start of the summer.

Hampshire paceman Tremlett has a foot injury which England are hopeful will respond to an injection that was administered earlier this week.

The inaugural World Twenty20 takes place in South Africa from September 11-24.
