Lumb sends Hawks soaring

Michael Lumb struck 82 as Hampshire chased down a target of 197 to beat Warwickshire in Pro40 Division One.

Opener's quick-fire 82 turns run-chase into formality

Michael Lumb and Sean Ervine starred with the bat as Hampshire Hawks chased down a target of 197 to beat Warwickshire Bears by eight wickets.

Lumb and Ervine shared a second-wicket stand of 147 to guide the Hawks to victory with 10.4 overs to spare under the Rose Bowl floodlights.

Opening batsman Lumb struck 12 fours and a six during an innings of 82 that was ended by James Anyon (2-51) with his side just six short of victory.

Ervine finished unbeaten on 80 from 77 balls to secure a result that moves the Hawks up to third in the Pro40 Division One table.

Hot Trott

Earlier, Jonathan Trott's 90 allowed Warwickshire to total 196-8 from their 40 overs after Darren Maddy opted to bat first.

Trott shared an opening stand worth 69 with Maddy (30), and 65 with Kumar Sangakkara (19) for the second wicket to give the Bears a solid platform.

Shaun Udal clean bowled Trott to deny him a century, but at 160-4 with eight overs remaining the visitors were well placed for a late onslaught.

But it never materialised as Hampshire, led by Billy Taylor's 3-33, took regular wickets to keep the run-rate in check during the closing overs.
