Harmison out for season

Scans confirm muscle tear in lower back

Durham and England fast bowler Steve Harmison will miss the remainder of the county season due to a back injury.

Harmison sustained the injury during Durham's Championship match against Surrey last week, and scans have now confirmed a muscle tear in his lower back that rules him out for six to eight weeks.

"Scans confirmed Harmison has a muscle tear in his right lower back," read a statement on the England and Wales Cricket Board's website.

"Harmison will continue to undergo rehabilitation treatment under the guidance of the ECB and Durham medical teams.

"The England team management will consider opportunities for Harmison to play cricket in the lead up to the Test tour of Sri Lanka in November."

Harmison's season has been injury-plagued - he suffered the back injury in his first Championship appearance since returning from a hernia operation.

The centrally contracted paceman is retired from limited-overs international cricket; England's next Test is not until they visit Sri Lanka in December, leaving him plenty of time to recover.
