What a breathless one-day international that was at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Sunday. And, from a statisticians point of view, a busy one!

Most of the damage to the records book was done by 26-year-old Martin Guptill, who broke many records on his own and was a major factor in a great number of others that were shattered as the New Zealand innings progressed.

Guptill's epic 189 not out, coming from just 155 deliveries, joined the great Sir Vivian Richards and the Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya in joint fifth place in the all-time list of highest scores in one-day internationals but he stands alongside Richards as the holder of the highest score against England and the highest score in England in this format of the game.

Guptill's innings, naturally, was the highest score by a Kiwi in one-day international cricket.

The innings ranks second in the list of highest scores by a New Zealander in List A cricket, slotting in behind Jamie How, who cracked 222 for Central Districts earlier this year in the domestic Ford Trophy tournament against Northern Districts. Central Districts won that game by just 19 runs!

Amazingly though, Guptill's innings saw the second-lowest amount of boundary runs scored in any of the 21 innings over 175 in one-day international cricket.

Two centuries in the space of three days for Guptill sees him join an exclusive list for the Kiwis. Mark Greatbatch scored back-to-back centuries across three days back in 1990 against England, hitting 102* at Headingley and then followed it up with 111 at The Oval.

Ross Taylor also achieved the feat - but his tons were separated by a mammoth 263 days as he scored 119 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in October 2011 and his next ODI innings was against West Indies at Basseterre (110) in July 2012.

The New Zealand innings featured three partnerships of over 100 and it was just the second time in ODI history that that has been achieved. The previous occasion was in the 2007 ICC World Cup in West Indies when South Africa crushed Netherlands by 221 runs at Basseterre.

After losing AB de Villiers to the second ball of the innings, the runs flowed:

The Ageas Bowl, only in existence since 2001 as a first-class venue, saw its highest team total in all one-day matches played, while Guptill's innings surpassed the 167 not out that Sean Ervine scored against Ireland in 2009 for Hampshire as the top individual tally on the ground.

A total of 632 runs for just 13 wickets fell on the day and that was the fifth highest total ever seen in a one-day international in England and the most since 2007 when over 600 runs were scored twice in the series against India.

The New Zealanders total of 359-3 was their sixth highest and their most against one of the perceived 'bigger' teams.

What shouldn't be forgotten about the action from the Ageas Bowl was Jonathan Trott's century - but sadly, it was the ninth occasion that an England batsmen has scored a second innings ton but ended up on the losing side ... and the joint-fifth highest after Marcus Trescothick's effort at Lord's against Pakistan in 2001.

And finally - and certainly not least - was James Anderson's one-day career best of 28. This was his 222nd List A match in his career dating back to 2000 and 169th one-day international, but he soared past his previous best of 20 not out at Brisbane in 2011.

Phew ... quite a day!!
