Bedford Academy's Wayne Instrell has been named the Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year 2012 at a prestigious awards ceremony held at Sky Studios.

"Wayne's story really stood out as a shining example of how the power of sport can change lives and he is an extremely worthy winner."
Jessica Ennis

The teenager received the accolade from Olympic Gold Medallist and Sky Sports Living for Sport ambassador Jessica Ennis in London where he was joined by 11 other student regional winners from across the UK.

Instrell, the East of England Regional Winner, stood out as a clear because he demonstrated how he has overcome the adversity of bullying and personal loss to regain his confidence using the power of sport.

Reflecting on Instrell's achievements, Ennis commented: "Congratulations to Wayne on his award, his story really stood out as a shining example of how the power of sport can change lives and he is an extremely worthy winner.

"It's fantastic to see how much of an impact Sky Sports Living for Sport is having on young people throughout the UK and how their attitudes can be shifted towards both sport and education through their involvement."

The Sky Sports Living for Sport awards recognise the efforts of students and teachers during 2011-12 in two categories: Student of the Year and Teacher of the Year, which this year went to Lesley Reynolds, a Senior Teaching Assistant at Brockington College, Leicester.

They celebrate the successful way secondary schools are using sport to inspire young people, thanks to their involvement in Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free UK-wide initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust.

Sky Sports Living for Sport - run in conjunction with the Youth Sport Trust - uses professional athletes and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of young people across the UK. This academic year, a third of all secondary schools in the UK will get involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport.

As the UK's overall winner, Wayne will receive a £100 sports voucher, an extra visit from an Athlete Mentor and £2,000 towards their school's next Sky Sports Living for Sport project. To find out more visit www.skysports.com/livingforsport
