Like many African footballers who were born in Europe or were scouted at a young age, Matip's international future could also have taken another path.
Born in Bochum to a German mother, he made his first significant career move when scouted by Schalke 04 in 2000.
The 18-year-old is considered a promising talent in Germany and Cameroon, but decided to play for the country of his father's birth as recently as March.
Matip is also the son of former Cameroonian footballer Jean Matip, which made his decision to represent the Indomitable Lions all the more natural.
He is also the brother of another footballer, Marvin Matip, and a cousin of former Middlesbrough striker Joseph-Desire Job.
Matip had originally turned down a call-up for the 2010 African Nations Cup back in December 2009 but Paul Le Guen has decided to take the starlet to South Africa after he accepted another call-up in March this year.
