Hearts warmed up for their Scottish Championship opener against Rangers next weekend with a morale-boosting 4-0 win at St Johnstone in Steven Anderson's testimonial match.

First-half goals from Osman Sow and Jason Holt, along with a Gary Oliver brace, proved decisive as home manager Tommy Wright fielded a much-changed line-up with the second leg of their Europa League qualifer against Spartak Trnava looming.

Wright did include Scottish international David Clarkson and former Falkirk midfielder Mark Millar in his side; both players are free agents having been released by Bristol Rovers and Dundee United respectively.

St Johnstone's Stevie May, who is the subject of a £1.2m bid from Rotherham United, also played having missed the opening game against Trnava through injury.

Morgaro Gomis teed up Sow for the opener, the latter showing good composure before providing an emphatic finish and three minutes later Holt curled his shot into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Despite a host of half-time changes, the Championship side continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges and Jordan McGhee set up Oliver to volley home the third goal before the hour.

A defensive mix-up afforded Oliver the opportunity to burst clear and round off the scoring leaving the stage clear for Anderson to thank all the fans for their support - and praise Hearts who, he said, 'gave us a hiding today'.

Anderson, who began his career with Dundee United, has spent 10 years in Perth, making over 230 appearances for the club and helping them to their Scottish Cup success last season; he scored the opening goal in the 2-0 final win over Dundee United and was named man of the match.

Watch Rangers tackle Hearts in the Scottish Championship on August 10, Sky Sports 1 from 13.30.
