Alex Revell hit a second-half equaliser against his former side to earn Rotherham a 1-1 draw and extend Brighton's winless run to 10 matches.
Defender Joe Bennett put Brighton ahead in first-half stoppage time but Rotherham, now unbeaten in their last five games, deserved their share of the points from the 1-1 draw in the Sky Bet Championship.
The bulk of the crowd of 24,370 at the Amex Stadium were left disappointed as Brighton were forced to settle for a sixth draw in their last seven games.
Brighton threatened early on when Spanish striker Adrian Colunga crossed for Chris O'Grady whose low shot flew wide.
O'Grady was leading the attack alongside Sam Baldock, with Craig Mackail-Smith, the only recognised striker to have scored a league goal for the Seagulls this season, missing his fourth game with a hamstring problem.
Midfielder Gary Gardner, on loan from Aston Villa, was off target for Albion when he volleyed over following a long ball by Jake Forster-Caskey.
The Seagulls enjoyed most of the early possession and, midway through the first half, Joe Bennett had a downward header turned around the post by goalkeeper Adam Collin after Inigo Calderon created the chance with a teasing low cross.
Rotherham went close to breaking the deadlock after 27 minutes through former Aston Villa striker Jordan Bowery, who headed a cross from Ben Pringle just wide.
Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale dived smartly to his left to keep out a goal-bound shot from Irish midfielder Paul Green on the half hour.
Colunga was off target when Baldock got free down the right and sent in an inviting cross to the far post.
Rotherham posed danger shortly before the break when Frazer Richardson crossed accurately for striker Revell whose firm header was saved by the alert Stockdale.
Brighton took the lead soon afterwards through the recalled Bennett. A pass from Gardner put the defender in on goal, and he hit the target at the second attempt after getting the better of a floundering Richardson.
The Millers hit back to level only four minutes into the second half through Revell, a Brighton player from 2006 to 2008, who coolly fired his third goal of the season after a low cross by Pringle.
Stockdale was then forced to produce a diving one-handed save to keep out an effort from Rotherham skipper Craig Morgan who had drifted 20 yards into the Seagulls half.
Home manager Sami Hyypia made his first change for the nervy Seagulls by introducing former Barnsley playmaker Paddy McCourt in place of Gardner.
McCourt received a booking from referee Michael Bull for bringing down Paul Taylor as Brighton struggled to assert their authority.
Collin kept the Millers on terms by saving a goal-bound header from Lewis Dunk after a corner by Forster-Caskey, and Colunga later put a header over at the near post.
Brighton were indebted to Stockdale in stoppage time when he produced a fine low save to keep out a free kick from substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris. Stockdale later tipped over an attempted clearance from home skipper Gordon Greer.
