Leeds goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has left the club by mutual consent after being unused so far this season.

The 36-year-old was the subject of bizarre speculation after it was reported that new owner Massimo Cellino had ordered Dave Hockaday to drop the keeper. Cellinio regards the number 17 – Kenny's birthday in May – as unlucky.

Having made 34 appearances last term, Kenny wasn't even on the bench for this season's Sky Bet Championship matches with Millwall and Middlesbrough, or the Capital One Cup clash with Accrington. Instead, Marco Silvestri and Stuart Taylor have been sharing the duties between the posts.

Former Bury and Sheffield United keeper Kenny joined United for £400,000 in July 2012 and has been capped seven times by the Republic of Ireland.

Leeds head coach Dave Hockaday said: "Paddy has been very professional about it, to be fair to him.

"He was not taken away to Italy (on the club's pre-season tour), although he had been ill a couple of days previously.

"He has conducted himself really well and I genuinely wish him well. I think he is a good keeper, and I think he is a good lad.

"The club will obviously come to a compromise deal with him and I am sure he will go somewhere and do well."
