Mauricio Pochettino's exit from Southampton after 16 months at the helm was confirmed on Tuesday, with his resignation paving the way for his appointment as Tottenham head coach.

Here, we take a look at some of the contenders to succeed the former Argentina international at St Mary's.

STEVE McCLAREN - Sky Bet odds 12/1

The former England boss has impressed at Derby, who were unlucky not to secure a return to the Premier League in last weekend's play-off final against QPR. McClaren worked with Saints executive director Les Reed during the pair's time at the Football Association and his reputation for working with English players would suit both parties.

MURAT YAKIN - Sky Bet odds 2/1

Having recently left Basle following an impressive spell in charge, he would be an obvious appointment if Southampton looked overseas again. Yakin does not speak great English, but that has not stopped Saints before, with their Swiss owners no doubt keeping close tabs on the former Swiss defender.

MICHAEL LAUDRUP - Sky Bet odds 8/1

Without a job since leaving Swansea under a cloud, the Dane can still point to his initial success in south Wales as evidence of his abilities. Laudrup led the Swans to Capital One Cup success last year and his desire to play possession-based, passing football would suit Southampton.

MALKY MACKAY - Sky Bet odds 10/1

One too many run-ins with controversial owner Vincent Tan saw the Scot leave Cardiff in December, just months after leading them into the Premier League. Mackay's decision to drop his legal case against the club earlier this month could be timely.

DAVID MOYES - Sky Bet odds 14/1

Not known for the attacking football favoured by Southampton in recent years, but on the market after a tough spell at Manchester United and looking to rebuild his reputation. He may not have been seen as a big enough name at Old Trafford, but that certainly would not be the case on the south coast.

EDDIE HOWE - Sky Bet odds 14/1

The Bournemouth manager rejected the chance to take over Saints in September 2010, with Nigel Adkins coming in and leading the then-League One side to back-to-back promotions. After a spell at Burnley, Howe is impressing again with the Cherries and could well be on Southampton's radar again.
