Connor Wickham: Says Sunderland were buzzing after Chelsea win
Sunderland's performances against Manchester City and Chelsea have given the squad added belief that they can avoid relegation, according to Connor Wickham.
The striker played a pivotal role in helping Gus Poyet's side take four points against the two title chasers, scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw at City before netting Sunderland's first in the shock 2-1 win at Chelsea.
Despite the outstanding results, Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League but are only three points adrift of safety with four games remaining this season.
Wickham was delighted to see their hard work pay off against City and Chelsea, but he is aware that his side still face a tough run-in to earn another season in the top flight.
"Of course I'm pleased with my goals and I'm pleased to be able to show everyone what I'm capable of, but I'm not going to get overly excited or get carried away," the 21-year-old told the Sunderland website.
"There's still a lot of hard work to do and there's four tough games ahead of us - we need to keep up these performances.
"The dressing room was buzzing after the win at Chelsea; we were all delighted.
"That's two solid performances - three if you include the Everton game - that have given us the break we needed.
"We knew Chelsea needed the points as they're pushing for the title; the points were just as important for us as we're pushing to get out of the bottom.
"On the day we had more grit and determination to see the game out and I think we deserved the win.
"We controlled most of the game and our hard work paid off. Now it's about maintaining this level of performance and be ready to go again next week."
