Sunderland defender John O'Shea said the Black Cats always believed they could end Jose Mourinho's 77-game unbeaten home record at Chelsea.

Fabio Borini scored a late penalty on Saturday night to snatch a 2-1 victory for the Premier League's bottom club at Stamford Bridge and dent Chelsea's title hopes after Connor Wickham had cancelled out Samuel Eto'o's opener.

"We were disappointed during the week when we only got a draw against Man City," O'Shea told Sky Sports.

"Obviously the position we are in, people are writing us off, but we have the belief that we can play and we can beat anybody.

"We showed it today but it gives us a bit more belief now to carry on because we can't just do it against the good teams, against the so-called big teams, we have to rise every week and if we can do that we can give ourselves a good chance."

O'Shea revealed that manager Gus Poyet had used Mourinho's record as motivation for a win that significantly boosts their survival bid.

"Have a guess what the manager's team talk was?" O'Shea added.

"Be that team. Be that team to beat that record. Why not?

"What's the headline going to be in the morning? Mourinho loses his record.

"We're the team that caused it and the manager, as always, deserves a lot of credit."
