Leeds United head coach David Hockaday is planning to keep youngster Dominic Poleon in his plans rather than sanction a sale.

A summer switch for the 20-year-old striker has been mooted as he faces stiff competition for places at Elland Road.

Poleon fanned the transfer flames further when announcing on Twitter that ‘change isn’t always bad’.

He was, however, handed a 10-minute run-out in a midweek Capital One Cup victory over Accrington Stanley and will be given the opportunity to push for further recognition.

Hockaday maintains that there is still a role for Poleon, despite further strengthening his attacking ranks with the signing of Billy Sharp from Southampton.

Pressed on whether Poleon could be made available, he said in the Yorkshire Evening Post: “At the moment, he’s a great lad to have on the bench. The challenge for him is to get in the starting XI rather than just the 18.

“Dominic is a great impact player. He comes on and has an effect and I’m happy with that.

“He’s a young boy and he needs to learn the game. He needs to know when to make certain runs, when to hold the ball up and how to manage matches. There’s lots of work to do but he’s a good, honest boy and every time he comes on, he has an impact.

“The challenge for him now is to come on for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes and then eventually work his way up to starting.”
