Kenny Jackett believes Wolverhampton Wanderers were deserving winners against Norwich City and has admitted to making an approach for Chris Wood.

Having stepped up into the Sky Bet Championship as League 1 champions, Wolves made the perfect start to life back in the second tier on Sunday.

They had to grind out the points against a resolute Norwich side that is still adjusting to relegation from the Premier League, but did enough as David Edwards’ powerful header saw them home.

The goal arrived shortly after Norwich had been reduced to 10 men following a second yellow card for Martin Olsson, with Jackett aware that there are areas for his side to improve on if they are to build on their opening weekend success.

He told Sky Sports: "I felt we played well. I felt we deserved the win.

"There are a lot of things we can learn from today. At times Norwich’s movement off the ball, particularly in the first half, was excellent and the way they try to hunt and close you down. We can pick up on those things and try to improve because we need to going into a tough season for us."

On the dismissal of Olsson on the hour mark, Jackett added: "It was a turning point. There were certain moments, (Lewis) Grabban's chance and the sending off and (Bakary) Sako late on with a clear-cut chance, along with what I felt was from David Edwards a very good goal."

"We have made an approach, but we have got a long way to go in terms of sealing him as a Wolves player."

While Wolves impressed as an attacking unit, with debutant Rajiv van La Parra looking particularly lively, Jackett remains in the market for further reinforcements.

Leicester striker Wood, a man he has previously worked with at Millwall, is considered to be a top target and talks have been opened regarding a possible switch to Molineux.

Jackett said: "We have made enquiries and we are in conversation but it’s a long way off being sorted.

"I don't really want to talk about other team's players. We have made an approach, but we have got a long way to go in terms of sealing him as a Wolves player."
