Wolverhampton Wanderers were among those to express an interest in Harry Maguire, but claim to have accepted defeat some time ago.
The highly-rated Sheffield United defender appears to be on his way to Hull City, with the Premier League side finally putting a deal on the table that has been deemed acceptable.
Wolves had hoped to steal a march on their rivals with two early offers, but saw each of those knocked back by Bramall Lane officials.
It was suggested that they were still in the running when Hull raised the stakes, but boss Kenny Jackett insists that was not the case.

“We’ve said players who did well in League One last season are a category of player we’d like to take with us if we can. There’s a select few in that category that, if we could get in our team, we would.
“We’ve been aware of those but we haven’t been involved in this one.”
While still scoring the market for possible additions, Jackett says he is happy with his current defensive options and has no need to rush recruitment.
He added: “The partnership of Danny Batth and Richard Stearman has done nothing wrong and is a very good partnership and will continue.
“But Sam Ricketts and Ethan Ebanks-Landell are both options.
“There’s good competition and with the back four who played on Saturday, plus Stearman and Ebanks-Landell, I’ve got six players who I’ve got confidence in.”
