Man City v Man United: City must approach derby with better attitude, says Niall Quinn

'Different' mentality needed in 'cauldron'

Niall Quinn has told Manchester City to approach this weekend’s derby “more revved up” than they were during a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Capital One Cup.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men's preparation for facing Manchester United (live at 12.30pm, Sunday, Sky Sports 1) was far from ideal as they crashed out of the cup in lacklustre fashion.

Goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko handed City defeat at the Etihad following a loss to West Ham and throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw with CSKA Moscow - and Quinn insists they must vastly improve against United.

Manchester City v Manchester United is live on Sky Sports 1 at 12.30pm

“It will be a different battle at the weekend," said the Sky Sports expert. "It will be a cauldron, a tempo that needs far more application.

"They’ve got to go out as a different team and with a different mentality.

"They shouldn’t pay too much attention to working out all their mistakes – they need to change their attitude. They’ve got to come into the United game far more revved up.

"There’s something not quite right at the moment and they’ve got to put that right.

"They didn’t apply themselves the way a normal Man City team in full flow would do against Newcastle, so they’ve got to really get together as a group over the next few days.

“Yaya Toure went down injured at one point [against Newcastle] and there was a groan around the ground. There was a big crowd as well, they were expecting to see City get themselves right back on track.

"They didn’t live up to it."
