The tension could not have been any higher at the KC Stadium after Hull shared a 2-2 draw with Cardiff but earned promotion to the Premier League after Leeds beat Watford 2-1.

Hull were leading 2-1 through goals from Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane. But Proschwitz saw his penalty saved in stoppage-time before Cardiff, who had already won promotion to the Premier League, netted from the spot themselves through Nicky Maynard in the 94th minute.

"At the start of the season you would talk about Hull making the top eight -just hijacking that last place in the play-offs," said Peter Beagrie.

"But when the pressure was on that is when Steve Bruce's experience of this league has told. They needed somebody different and he brought in Elmohamady who has been tremendous.

"Bruce has to take huge credit. He made changes to the formation and the personnel. He changed to a 4-4-2 formation to get more bodies forward. The key was getting Brady further forward. We have seen his ability and creativity.

"Proschwitz has had an absolute stinker since he has come from the German second division but Bruce put him on because they were getting a lot of balls down the wide positions and he was a threat in the air.

"I thought Bruce was a great appointment - this area love down to earth people with a great work ethic and that has been epitomised by the way his team has played this year. He has had a really good recruitment policy and the chairman has backed him on that which has been justified by promotion to the Premier League.

Under the radar

"For a long time Hull have flown under the radar really, all the talk has been about the other sides. But they have done a brilliant job and strengthened at the right time.

"In a division where you have to be consistent they have been anything but that of late but they have finished the job off today against a Cardiff side who I must admit were absolutely brilliant in terms of application and attitude when the job has already been done."
