Emmanuel Adebayor insists Tottenham must be more ruthless after twice surrendering the lead to draw 2-2 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Goals from Nacer Chadli and Christian Eriksen at the start of each half put Mauricio Pochettino’s side in front, but their efforts were nullified by a fine solo effort from Adam Johnson and a late Harry Kane own-goal.

It was a third draw of the season for Sunderland, but Tottenham were left to lament missing out on two points after dominating proceedings on Wearside.

Striker Adebayor believes Spurs were the better team and admits they must be more clinical if they are to better their sixth-place finish from last season.

The most frustrating thing was that we weren’t rewarded for our performance. If you play badly and draw then it is quite good, as I am sure Sunderland’s players will tell you.

“It was worrying not to win,” Adebayor admitted to reporters. “If it happens a lot it is a worry.

“The most frustrating thing was that we weren’t rewarded for our performance. If you play badly and draw then it is quite good, as I am sure Sunderland’s players will tell you.

“Their manager won’t be able to believe they came away with a point. We’ve got to finish teams off when we’ve got them on the ropes.

“We didn’t do that here. That’s difficult to take after dominating the game.”

Following victories over West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham lost to Liverpool and Adebayor says their draw at Sunderland was hard to take.

“We’re very disappointed because we should have won the game and Sunderland will be happy playing like that and taking a point,” he added.

“It felt like a good performance, we were in such control. But we will head back, watch it again and see where we went wrong because when you have so much of a game and don’t win, it means something has gone wrong.

“If there was a positive, it was that we started both halves very well. But twice we have ourselves a platform and couldn’t build on it.”
