AFC Wimbledon have been charged by the Football League with fielding an ineligible player during their win over Cheltenham in March.

The League Two club are accused of selecting the player in question, Jake Nicholson, for the 4-3 victory on March 22.

Nicholson, a former Tottenham trainee who joined on a free transfer in February following his departure from Scottish club Morton, made his debut and scored in the game.

A Football Disciplinary Committee has been convened to hear the case on April 28 and can deduct points at its discretion.

Wimbledon are currently on 56 points - nine clear of the League Two relegation places with two games to play.

Nicholson has since made two further appearances for the club, who have been advised by their QC Jim Sturman not to disclose any further details about the case.

A club statement read: "As soon as the outcome of the hearing has been determined we will publish the background to this charge."
