The Indian batsman, making his 152nd Test appearance, guided the first ball after tea down to third-man for three to move beyond Lara's total of 11,953 runs.

Tendulkar had arrived at the crease in mid-afternoon with India well set on 146-2.

He needed just 15 to surpass Lara - his great West Indian contemporary - but quickly lost two partners, Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman, at the other end.

That prompted a period of rebuilding in the company of Sourav Ganguly with Tendulkar agonisingly two runs shy of the record on 13 not out at tea.

But he wasted no time after the break, easing Peter Siddle's first delivery for three to spark jubilant scenes and a firework display.

Tendulkar went on to contribute 88 off 111 balls before edging Australia's debutant seamer Siddle to slip late in the day to leave his overall tally at 12,027.

"It has taken me 19 years to get the record," said Tendulkar, who made his debut in 1989 as a 16-year-old.

"It can't happen overnight.

"It has been a fantastic journey. There have been ups and downs in the process of success."
