Gavin Henson has undergone ankle surgery and will be sidelined for three months, ruling him out of Wales' summer tour to South Africa.

Henson, 26, had a keyhole procedure on Tuesday to repair the damaged ankle ligaments he sustained during the Ospreys' Heineken Cup quarter-final defeat to Saracens on April 6.

The centre joins Wales coach Warren Gatland's growing injury list for the Tests against the Springboks in Bloemfontein (Jun 7) and Pretoria (Jun 14).

Gatland has already lost Henson's Ospreys colleague, scrum-half Mike Phillips, because of a serious knee injury, while Llanelli Scarlets number nine Dwayne Peel is battling to overcome a shoulder problem.
