Netball World Cup: Australia and New Zealand cruise into semi-finals

The world's top two sides, Australia and New Zealand, made light work of their final qualification matches to breeze into the Netball World Cup semi-finals on Friday.

The Diamonds took on Wales and were victorious, 89-24, securing themselves a last four berth against Jamaica.

The Welsh Dragons have had a successful tournament so far and will now take on African powerhouse Malawi for a chance to finish fifth overall.

Kyra Jones and Chelsea Lewis were once again impressive, but for the entirety of the 60 minutes Trish Wilcox's young side were overwhelmed by the reigning world champions.

Diamonds' coach Lisa Alexander used the match as an opportunity to try out some different combinations with 11 of the 12 squad members getting court time.

Erin Bell and Caitlin Thwaites continued their brilliant form, shooting at 92% and 93% for the match.

Errors and turnovers were costly for Wales in the final quarter as the Australian's limited their Welsh opponents to just three goals.

Australia will play Jamaica in the semi-finals after the Sunshine Girls defeated Malawi 63-62 in the tightest game of the tournament so far.

Both teams put on a spectacle for the roaring Sydney crowd, but it was fourth ranked Jamaica whose consistency and composure for all four quarters got them over the line.

Jamaican vice-captain, Paula Thompson, said it was “discipline” that helped them edge the match.

Highlights of New Zealand v Uganda from the Netball World Cup.

“Once we are disciplined, we are fine, but once we go away from the game plan, we get in trouble,” she said.

Also on Friday, New Zealand set-up a mouthwatering semi-final with England after thrashing the Uganda She Cranes 76-33.

The 43-goal victory also means the Silver Ferns remain the only unbeaten side in the competition.
