Jason Plato secured pole position for the British Touring Car Championship round at Silverstone while points leader Gordon Shedden could only manage 19th.
Plato stormed to his fifth pole of the season - and third in a row - with a new BTCC qualifying record of 58.717 second around the venue's National Circuit.
Mat Jackson was second fastest, bouncing back after his Redstone Racing Ford Focus after a practice session mishap.
Frank Wrathall was next up while the top five qualifiers were completed by Robert Collard and Dave Newsham.
But the top two in the championship standings - Matt Neal and Shedden - could only manage 10th and 19th respectively in their factory Honda Yuasa Racing Team Honda Civics.
Plato, who is third in the table, said: "Gordon only 19th - that's a shame, isn't it? You shouldn't wish ill on your rivals - but I do.
"Hopefully the conditions will stay dry for tomorrow because clearly we're in great shape and a good points haul will really make this championship come alive for us.
"Things have a way of evening themselves out and maybe here it's our turn after some bad luck."
