Sylvain Guintoli leads Eugene Laverty in race one at Philip Island
Aprilia dominated the opening round of the World Superbike Championship in Australia with race wins for Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty.
Guintoli took the opening race ahead of Laverty at Philip Island and the positions were reversed in the later contest, leaving both riders on 45 points at the end of the first weekend's competition.
The Frenchman started on the second row but carnage ahead helped him make quick progress, pole-sitter Carlos Checa crashing out on the 13th lap to leave Laverty in the lead.
But Guintoli stormed past two laps later and won by nearly a second-and-a-half with Laverty holding off Michel Fabrizio for second as the Italian manufacturer swept the podium places.
They were similarly dominant in the second race but Laverty was able to hold off the challenge of Guintoli in the closing laps to score by less than a second.
This time, Fabrizio had to settle for fourth place after making a mistake on the final lap as he challenged Marco Melandri's BMW - Melandri failed to finish the first race when he was brought down in Checa's crash.
The next round takes place at the Aragon circuit in Spain on 14 April.
