Shane Byrne set a new lap record at Knockhill to claim pole position for Sunday's fourth round of the British Superbike Championship.

The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider scorched around the Scottish circuit in only 48.333 seconds to smash his own previous best mark which was set in 2006.

Byrne, who was securing his second pole of the season, was just 0.010 seconds quicker than Australian Josh Brookes on the Tyco Suzuki.

Championship leader Alex Lowes, who is only one point ahead of Byrne in the overall standings, was third quickest, with Jon Kirkham heading the second row of the grid.

Japan's Ryuichi Kiyonari produced his best qualifying performance of the season to claim fifth place ahead of PJ Jacobsen and James Westmoreland.

Josh Waters was eliminated after Q1 and will start from 19th spot on the grid, while his Milwaukee Yamaha team-mate James Ellison had to settle for 13th place.

Byrne said: "I'm really pleased with this. My first flying lap was good, but then Josh Brookes came through and I thought I just had to go for it.

"I had a few moments on the lap, but here we are. I wanted to get that pole position for my wife Petra who is unwell - hopefully that will give her something to smile about and thanks to everyone for sending her their best wishes.

"Our race pace is good but we have a bit of work to do and a few little tweaks to make to perfect it for the race, but to come here and do this, ahead of teams who have tested here before, is good and we are in pretty good shape for the races."
