Chad Mendes stopped Ricardo Lamas in the first round of their featherweight fight on Saturday night.
A potential future opponent of Conor McGregor, Mendes will now have an eye on the Irishman's July championship fight against Jose Aldo in the hope he will receive the next opportunity.
Lamas, ranked at No 4 in the division, proved no match for Mendes in Fairfax, Virginia, and succumbed within three minutes.
Mendes landed an overhand right hand that thumped the top of Lamas' head and floored him. He bravely held on as Mendes piled in with further punches on the ground but the finish could not be avoided.
Lamas briefly returned to his feet before spiralling out of control and the referee stepped in at two minutes and 35 seconds.
Mendes has already lost two title fights to long-serving champion Aldo but could receive another shot if Ireland's McGregor takes the championship in the summer.
