Olympic slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin won the women's World Cup slalom race at Maribor.

The 19-year-old American, who retained her world title earlier this month, had enough of an advantage from the first leg to ease off in the second run and post just the 12th fastest time.

Slovakian Veronika Zuzulova was second with Czech Sarka Strachova, who was second after the first leg, third.

Slovenian star Tina Maze, who returned from the World Championships with two titles to her name, failed to finish the first leg in Saturday’s giant slalom and she once again failed to reward her thousands of fans who flocked to the slopes as she straddled a gate on the second leg, having been sixth after the first run.

"It definitely doesn't work out well for me here," said Maze.

Meanwhile, Matthias Mayer gave Austrian fans something more to cheer about when he won Sunday's World Cup super-G in Saalbach, a day after leading a home clean sweep of the first three places in the downhill.

In foggy conditions, Mayer was 23 hundredths of a second ahead of Frenchman Adrien Theaux, with Norway's World Cup downhill leader Kjetil Jansrud four hundredths of a second further back in third.

The victory, his third in the World Cup, eases Mayer up one place to third in the super-G standings.

Mayer's fellow-Austrian Hannes Reichelt, the recently-crowned world champion in the discipline, was forced to abandon his run.

Mayer said: "A double after my Olympic title and my victory last year, I'm finding my pace at last. Obviously my injury in November did not help my season start. Now I feel I'm where I should be."
