Non Stanford will make her long-awaited comeback from injury at next month’s International Triathlon Union World Series race in Yokohama on May 16.

The Swansea triathlete has not competed since her world title triumph in September 2013 after battling to overcome foot injuries.

“I'm excited and very grateful to be getting back on the start line... but I am scared," she said.

"I've been out a long time, and I guess there is apprehension about have I forgotten how to swim in open water, what if I forget what to do in transition?

"I'm hopeful it's going to be a bit like driving and it all comes automatically back to me.

"But I think I'd be lying if I said there wasn't any anxiety over it, but once the start gun goes and you get involved I'm sure it'll just get on with it and I'll be fine."

Stanford made history in 2013 when she became the first woman to win the U23 title and senior world title in consecutive seasons.

The 26-year-old’s compatriot Helen Jenkins is also due to make a return to action and will compete at the Cape Town ITU event on Saturday after a 10-month injury lay-off.
