Money in the Bank 2014: John Cena wins WWE World Heavyweight Title in Ladder Match

Chain Gang Soldier gives Kane and Randy Orton Attitude Adjustments

The Champ is here!

It’s a catchphrase John Cena has yelled for years and he can bellow it loud and proud now after beating Randy Orton, Kane, Roman Reigns, Sheamus, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt and Alberto Del Rio to the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Title at Money in the Bank.

The Cenation Leader and his seven rivals competed in a hellacious Ladder Match in Boston, with each man hoping to snare the belt that the injured Daniel Bryan had stripped from him at the start of June.

But it was local hero Cena who prevailed, dishing out Attitude Adjustments to Kane and, ultimately, Orton before scaling the rungs and unhooking the title that hung tantalisingly above the squared circle.

That turn of events secured the West Newbury native a 15th world championship reign and left The Authority – who were hoping to see the man they anointed as The Face of WWE, Orton, emerge with the gold – seething.

The clash ended in high-octane fashion, then, but the start was a little more sedate, with a series of one-on-one scraps taking place, most notably Cena versus Wyatt and Cesaro against Del Rio.

But things got spicy when Orton tried to ascend the ladder, with The Viper – who nabbed a briefcase during last year’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view – knocked down by Reigns and crashing his skull into the metal.

Reigns and Cena soon got the WWE Universe pumped when they faced off whilst their competitors lay stricken elsewhere – and it was the former Shield powerhouse who got the better of the exchange.

Rolled out

The Juggernaut slithered free from Cena’s Attitude Adjustment attempt and responded with his trademark manoeuvre, the Spear, before he clambered the steps towards sports entertainment’s ultimate prize.

Orton defied Reigns’ charge, however, flooring the ex-Hound of Justice with a backbreaker, and it wasn’t long before chaos ensued and multiple competitors rolled out their finishing moves.

There was a Sister Abigail (Wyatt), a Brogue Kick (Sheamus), a European Uppercut (Cesaro) and an RKO (Orton) and after Kane, acting as Orton’s protector throughout the bout, clobbered Reigns, The Apex Predator seemed primed to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

But The Viper and his henchman did not bank on Cena finding a second wind – and they were quickly made to pay for that miscalculation, with the Chain Gang Soldier plucking the strap and rejoicing in The Authority’s displeasure.

Cena’s next opponent is yet to be determined but it is unlikely to be Bryan, as the former titlist took to the Money in the Bank Kick-Off show to reveal that his recovery from neck surgery is not going smoothly.

The Submission Specialist explained that his arm is still not at full strength and that medical personnel are considering operating on him once more in order to remedy the problem, which has kept him out of action since the Extreme Rules event on May 4.

But Bryan did issue a defiant statement before he took his leave, vowing that upon his return to the ring he would reclaim the belt he won on an emotional night in New Orleans at WrestleMania XXX.
