Craig Berube has been sacked as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers after they failed to reach the play-offs.

The Canadian had been in charge of the Flyers for two seasons and compiled a 75-58-28 (553) record. In his first season they made the play-offs.

But they finished this season sixth, fourteen points off the mark in the Metropolitan Division.

After Buffalo's Ted Nolan and Toronto's Peter Horachek, the 49 year-old becomes the third NHL coach to lose his job since the regular season ended on Saturday.

Berube had an eighteen-season affiliation with the club. He played for the Flyers in the 1980s and 90s and had been an assistant coach for six seasons before gaining the top job three games into the 2013 season as a replacement for Peter Laviolette.

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said: “In a nutshell, in the end I didn’t feel like he got enough out of our group collectively.”

The club begin the search for their nineteenth head coach immediately. The Flyers hope to name a replacement for Berube before the NHL Entry Draft in Florida on June 15-17.

"That's the goal," Hextall said. "But we're going to do our due diligence. In the end we’re looking for the guy who can take this group to another level not only short term, but long term."
