Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby scored his 20th goal of the season as the Penguins beat Washington 4-3 to register their first win over the Capitals this season.

Victory moved the Penguins three points above the Capitals in the Metropolitan Division, and the same margin from the division-leading New York Islanders.

Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin had three assists, while Patric Hornqvist, Brandon Sutter and Chris Kunitz also scored for the Penguins, who chalked up their third successive victory.

Crosby and Malkin both earned their first points of the season against Washington, who had won the previous three meetings between the sides with an aggregate score of 10-1.

Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson and Troy Brouwer found the net for the Capitals.

Elsewhere, Calgary beat New Jersey 3-1 with goaltender Karri Ramo making 26 saves for the Flames.

However, the Devils were always a threat and were only killed off by TJ Brodie’s goal 40 seconds from the end of the third period. The loss ended New Jersey’s four-game winning streak.

And Ottawa scored a goal in each period to beat Anaheim 3-0 at the Honda Center where rookie goalie Andrew Hammond made 25 saves for the visiting Senators.

Meanwhile, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane has undergone surgery to repair a left clavicle fracture and is expected to miss the rest of the NHL season.

Kane was hurt during Tuesday's game against Florida and team doctor Michael Terry said: "The procedure went very well and we anticipate a full recovery in approximately 12 weeks."

His recovery window would keep Kane out of action until around the middle of May which means he would miss the rest of the season and the beginning of the play-offs which open on April 15.
