The Montreal Canadiens stayed a point ahead of the New York Islanders at the top of the Eastern Conference after both teams won on Tuesday.

Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher each scored twice and Michael Bournival was also on the mark as the Canadiens claimed an impressive 5-2 victory over St Louis.

David Backes and TJ Oshie were on target for the Blues but they were never in the contest.

The Islanders were made to work hard for their victory against the Arizona Coyotes with the match closer than the 5-1 scoreline suggests.

Anders Lee's opener was cancelled out by Mark Arcobello and that is the way it stayed until the third period, when Matt Martin and Johnny Boychuk scored within 57 seconds of each other.

And the Islanders gave themselves further breathing room thanks to goals from Kael Mouillierat and Brock Nelson as the Coyotes slumped to their seventh consecutive defeat.

Third win

The Islanders' New York rivals, the Rangers, sealed their third win in a row after edging out the Calgary Flames 1-0, with Kevin Hayes scoring the game's only goal in the third period.

The Los Angeles Kings sealed an eighth straight win by the same scoreline against the Detroit Red Wings, thanks to Jonathan Quick's fourth shutout of the season and Justin Williams' first period powerplay goal.

Calle Jarnkrok, Craig Smith, Roman Josi, Filip Forsberg and Eric Nystrom were all on-target in the Nashville Predators' 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche, who bookended the scoring through Nathan MacKinnon and John Mitchell respectively.

The Chicago Blackhawks let a two-goal lead slip but still recorded a 3-2 shootout triumph over the Florida Panthers and Ryan Stanton and Zack Kassian scored in the Vancouver Canucks' come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins.

Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves in the Winnipeg Jets' 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars, while Benoit Pouliot scored twice as the Edmonton Oilers edged out Minnesota 2-1 to end the Wild's three-game winning run.

Justin Faulk, Jeff Skinner, Jordan Staal and Jay McClement scored as the Carolina Hurricanes thrashed the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 while the Buffalo Sabres, who have the worst record in this season's NHL, defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2.
