Dwyane Wade has confirmed he will test the waters of free agency after opting out of his contract with the Miami Heat.

The guard had a $16.1m option for next season, but could still return to the franchise despite being able to negotiate with the remaining NBA franchises as an unrestricted free agent.

Free agency opens on July 1 and the right deal could see Wade represent another franchise for the first time - he has spent his entire career so far in Miami, who drafted him with the fifth pick of the 2003 draft.

Wade came close to leaving the Heat last summer just after team-mate LeBron James departed, having held brief talks with the Chicago Bulls, his hometown team, before agreeing to a new two-year deal that paid him around $11m less than the one he opted out of.

His decision makes him one of the league's most valuable free agents along with former team-mate James, who has opted out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
