Masters rookie Stephen Gallacher had no hesitation when asked whether he could win on his debut appearance at Augusta.

The 39-year-old Scot is one under par at the halfway stage after a second round 72 and very much in contention heading into the weekend.

Fuzzy Zoeller was the last man to win on his Augusta debut back in 1979, but when asked whether he could emulate the American's feat on Sunday, Gallacher told Sky Sports: "Why not?

"I'm delighted to still be in red numbers, to be honest. It was a bit tricky, the wind is a bit up and the greens are firming up.

"Every hole is huge. The greens are a lot slopier as well. It is just you have to see it to believe it, really."

"It's a very strategic course. I think everybody back home knows how to play it, it's just a case of trying to do it that's the hard part. Generally I would say if I missed a green or anything like that, you have to be happy with bogey."

Asked what was the secret to his success, Gallacher added: "Probably just not any bad memories.

"I have been out of position a couple of times but generally I have been the right side of the holes, so it makes the putt or the chip easier. When you get out of position, you are just happy taking a bogey really."

Asked what his first impressions were of Augusta, he said: "Until you get here you can't comprehend the slopes, the gradients, and just how big everything is.

"Every hole is huge. The greens are a lot slopier as well. It is just you have to see it to believe it, really."

Gallacher has won three times on the European Tour, including in Dubai earlier this year, but has never contended seriously in a major.
