Phil Mickelson: A perennial challenger at Augusta

In theory, US Open tracks shouldn't suit Phil Mickelson given his habit of spraying it off the tee.

But that idea just doesn't stack up given that the left-hander is a five-time runner-up in this event.

All those five second places came over on the East (four times in New York and once in North Carolina) so that certainly bodes well with Merion on that side of the United States too.

Mickelson's success in US Opens is down to his electric short game and sharp irons and the fact that Merion will take the driver out of his hands could be a blessing in disguise.

The 42-year-old was a huge disappointment at Augusta earlier this year but on his very next start looked set to win at Quail Hollow before faltering over the last couple of holes.

However, he does have a win under his belt in 2013 and a spectacular one at that.

It came in the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale where he threatened to break a string of records and was a power lip-out away from shooting a magical 59 in the opening round.

Given his popularity with fans and agonising record of near misses in this event you'd struggle to find a more popular winner and a second place at the St Jude Classic in his final US Open prep sets him up perfectly.
